Let's hear from ya!

A few years ago we had a popular online guestbook on our school's website, with oodles of messages from former students, some who attended as far back as the 1950s! The site that was hosting the guestbook up suddenly disappeared, along with all those wonderful entries.

I'm hoping that this blog can take its place.

If you are a former student, parent, or friend of Hickam Elementary, or if you have current ties with our school, please leave a comment to this or other posts I'll put up. We'd love to hear from you!

Thanks for your kind words about our school. That jazz night was our first time ever, and our music teacher and her students really out-did themselves!

I'm glad you feel HES has been very good for your grandchildren -- whom I probably know (and they know me) since I'm their computer teacher!

Thanks again for stopping by!

Wow, it's been so long (but not as long as some other people lurking around here)! I just graduated high school, and was looking through yearbooks and all, and ended up here...

THANKS to all my teachers from HES-Mrs. Doi, Miss Uyehara, Mrs. Kawakami, Mr. Hamana, and Mrs. Silva- for a great education! And a special thanks to Mr. Hamana, whose faith shined even when teaching and impacted my life tremendously even though I was so young.

Katherine, three of your former teachers are still at Hickam! I can tell them you say "Hi" once school resumes. You might remember me, too. I was teaching the 3rd grade for 10 years then became the computer teacher.

Thanks for stopping by!!

Hi, David..

Thanks for checking in! I do know about that website because Rob contacted me years ago when we had a guestbook on our school's site and I contacted him recently about this blog.

I'll make sure Ms. Tim (who still teaches at our school!) knows you stopped by!

I'm a former student of Hickam Elementary School and right now I just graduated from High School in Tokyo, Japan. I just wanted to say hi to one of my favorite teachers there, Ms. Tim. She was my 6th grade teacher and my sister had here too. My sister would be graduating next year from High School. My little brother would be attending his first year in High School. All I just want is my former 6th grade teachers and other teachers to contact me because I would be happy to hear from them again. I would tell them who this is but I would have to get my own blogger first. I'm happy you guys decided to set up this blogger so former HES students can contact you guys.

Hi, My name is Don McClain and I thought I would drop a line. I attended HES in the early 80s and I remember my teacher Mrs. Kealoha. I don't know if I spelt it right but she was awesome. I will never forget her and my time at HES. I miss Hickam and hope to visit it again one day.

David,

Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you had a wonderful teacher while you were at Hickam, and hope you get to visit someday!

I am was surpirsed to find this site. I attended HES 1976-1983 1st thru 6th grade. I have very fond memories of good times, May Day performances, great teachers. I remember having Mr Smith's class in the old hangar. Anyone remember Mr. Smith. I too was proud to be a JPO. I remember lining up at our windows and watching the Navy ships go past our rooms. Mrs Doi was teaching there as well as Mrs Marion, Mrs Ono (music teacher)and several names I don't remember. Loved being able to ride my bike to school everyday. We had to work KP back in those days and we actually looked forward to it.

I attended in HES in 1956. I recall Miss Tanaka, a very pretty lady, and another teacher, whose name I've forgotten, who used to throw erasers at misbehaving kids...and she never missed!

I remember MayDay. Do they still do that, I wonder? Watching the ships come in to Pearl from the playground, climbing on the tower out front and ooching around that little ledge about three feet up in our bare feet.

I recall walking to school on a street with huge trees that bore purple blossems. At times the light was purple too. I remember KeeHee(?) lagoon and the fun we had splashing in the ocean. What a great time those three years were and how lucky we all were to have them!

Wow, this is great! Good to hear from former students! Just wanted to reply to your comments:

Christina: I remember you! I'll remind our teachers to check out this blog, and tell Ms. Tim specifically that you signed in. She'll be thrilled to hear from you! Thanks for checking in and pls tell other classmates that you might keep in touch with.

"anonymous" (1976-1983): You have a great memory, being able to recall most of your teachers' names. You were lucky to have been able to stay at one school for so long (1st - 6th grade); most of our students rotate out in about three years. Someone asked about a Mr. Smith a while back via email to our website, and I was told that he had passed away.

Kate: Very impressive! YOU have an even better memory since you attended our school 50 years ago!! Yes, we still hold May Day programs, though we call them Spring Programs now. I hope you've had the opportunity to visit Hawaii again in the half-century since you attended our school.

Thank you all for stopping by!

The last comment is from me....christina paik. i just don't remember my username and pasword for my blog. can someone e-mail me my username and password for me? I really want all my teachers and all the staff to e-mail me back as soon as the school year starts. when does the school year start in hes? I attended hes for at least three years (1997-1999). Now I'm going to college in Maryland but I'm working part time now to earn enough money. I just hope all my teachers will e-mail me and tell me how they are doing right now. I have so much to tell them ever since I moved away from Hawaii. Anyways, can't wait to hear from all the teachers and staff. I had fond memories in hes with all my old friends and teachers...plus the staff.

HES blog admin said...

Christina: I gave Ms. Tim your email address, so be expecting a message from her soon!

Daniel: You didn't give me your email address, so I can't have Mr. Chatani email you, but I did mention to all our teachers that some of them were mentioned here by former students, so they might leave comments for you guys. But please send me your email address if you'd like Mr. Chantani to write back.

I went to HES from 2000-2003, grades 4-6. I absolutely loved it there, and I miss it so much.
My teachers were:
4th, Mr. Chatani
5th, Mr. Moore
6th, Mrs. Tim
I do not miss Mr. Moore in the least bit, but out of curiousity, is he still at HES? I would love to hear from Mr. Chatani and Mrs. Tim; because of them, I plan to get my teaching degree in the future. My e-mail is Jerrigirl91@nc.rr.com. Could you please have them contact me?

Oh, and I remember you, as well. I learned so much in your class!

HES blog admin said...

Hi, Jeri Lynn! Good to hear from you. Yes, Mr. Moore is still at our school, teaching the gifted/talent class. I'll let Mr. Chatani and Ms. Tim know you'd like to keep in touch. Sometimes teachers are too busy to read this blog, but once in a while they make the time. I'm sure they'd LOVE to hear how they inspired you to become a teacher in the future!

Aloha!

Mr. Moores still teaching...can you tell him Christina Paik said hi to him!

Hi, Miriam! Loved reading your comment! I'll be sure to tell your former teachers that you stopped by, but they can contact you only if you leave your email address. Click on the contact link on the side of the page to send it to me (Ms. Haraguchi) and I'll pass it on to them.

I remember you, and can't believe you're attending college already!

We don't play the "Raindrops Are Falling" song anymore :(

Take care!

From Jim Chickering:

I don't know what possessed me to look up Hickam AFB and follow the link to the Elementary School blog, but I'm glad I did.

I'm another voice from the somewhat-distant past; my dad was Base Commander for 3 years in the late 50s - early 60s. I attended HES for the 3rd grade, 1957-58, and Miss Tanaka was my teacher. Kate, you are absolutely correct - she was a pretty lady. I only spent the one year at HES then went on to Punahou for the remaining two years of our tour. I fondly remember those 3 magical years in Hawaii; I returned with my wife for our honeymoon 20 years ago, and was amazed at how much everything had changed, but the spirit was the same. I play with Na Mele Pumehana, a Hawaiian band, formed to accompany the dancers from Hui Hula O' Punahele, the top halau here in the St. Louis, MO area. All I have to do is close my eyes and I'm back on 8th street, riding my bike to the Saturday morning kids' show at the base theater, watching the parades on the parade ground, cautiously exploring the spooky water tower, swimming at Kihi Lagoon, vacationing at Bellows AFB, playing Little League baseball and Peewee football, and thoroughly enjoying the magical islands. Aloha to everyone, and I hope I get to return once more.

anonymous,

Three of your four teachers are still here, only Mrs. Stone moved away (and had a baby!). Mrs. Tanabe just had a baby and will be back from her maternity leave next semester. If you read this and would like to leave your name, I can tell them you stopped by!

HES blog admin said...

Jim,

Thanks for finding your way here! You have an amazing memory from your time in Hawaii. Evidently things Hawaiian are very dear to you since you play Hawaiian music for a halau!

You thought the water tower was scary when you were a kid? They're starting to dress it up in lights, as they do this time each year, to transform it into a huge, lit "Christmas tree" that changes colors. I've never been able to take a good picture of it at night, but I might try again so I can post it here on this blog.

Thanks again for finding your way here!

My name is Daniel Freeman and i went to HES from Kindergarden to 3rd grade in the late '80s early '90s. I am always thinking about Hickam. I remember my 2nd grade teacher had us bury a bunch of different things in plastic bags as a science experiment. I always wanted to come back to see if she dug them up. But anyway Hickam is a great school and I am have so many early memories from there. Now I live in Virginia Beach. I am absolutely coming back to visit.

If anybody went to hickam when I did hit me up @ dannyflames@hotmail.com

I'm guessing this has to be Ms.Haraguchi who reads all of these since you were the computer lab teacher. You and probably all of my teachers don't remember me but I attended HES from '98-'01 (Kenji Lantow) and my sister attended from '98-'00 (Akina)
I'm currently in my senior year in WA. And my dad finally retired here back in 2001.
One of my favorite memories from HES are the school lunches! Here in the mainland we don't get kalua pork, or saimen, not even chili with rice. But i hope all of my former teachers are doing well. Mr. Sakata, Mr. Hamanah, Ms. Staley, Ms. Yanagi.
Feel free to e-mail me if you remember me.

Hi, Kenji!

I do remember you and your sister a little bit, even remember that both of you had Mr. Sakata in the 6th grade! All of your former teachers are still at Hickam, and I'll email them to let them know you've contacted us (teachers don't check in here and rarely read the guestbook).

Have you ever had a chance to visit Hawaii since you've left? Maybe after you graduate -- you have to taste our food again!

Thanks for leaving msgs on our guestbook and blog!

I haven't been able to come back to Hawaii since I left. But maybe one day since we still have a lot of family still out there. And I do miss the food, but there's now an L&L not too far from my house.

Wow. I sure miss HES. I am going into 8th grade now in Florida. I was at HES from 2001-2004. 1st grade to 3rd grade. I loved doing the Spring program. I remember our class in 3rd grade we did a song about surfing or something. I don't even remember it. I have lost touch with soooooo many people. If you think you remember me please email me. kayballet@yahoo.com

I'm so glad that I googled HES! Although I wasn't able to find any of my old classmates or neighbors, it's great to see that the campus still looks almost the same. I live on Oahu and I'd love to take a walk through the campus and show my kids where I went to school. I've had so many awesome memories from that school...I went there from '88-'92. Mrs. Hall was my first grade teacher...and I think it was Mrs. Higuchi who was my 2nd grade teacher...but she had to leave for some medical reason. My 3rd grade teacher was Mrs. Mowry in the portable classrooms...and 4th was Mrs. Matsumoto...and I think the Principal or VP was Mr. Otani?!I wonder if any of them are still there?

I remember on rainydays we'd have indoor recess..and we'd know that by "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" playing over the loudspeaker. I loved going to computer class...most ecspecailly because it was Air Conditioned! I had such a great time there. May Day programs were fun...and Christmas time was great cause the water tower lit up through the holiday. I have so many unforgetable memories! If anyone was possibly my classmate don't hesitate to email me: inalehon_rus@yahoo.com

Hi! Thanks for leaving a comment on our blog. I haven't updated it because I didn't have any more to say that wasn't on our website.

But I'm glad you stopped by! It's so cool to read what former students have to say about their time with us once they've left. You mentioned your 3rd grade teacher was Ms. Mowry. I was in the room next to her's (P-1) before I became the tech coordinator/computer teacher. Ms. Mowry was with us a brief time, but I do remember her and a little bit about the way she taught. No one's ever mentioned her before in our blog or guestbook. She was..different. But thankfully children are resilient. And your 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Matsumoto, made up for a lot of things that took place in Ms. Mowry's room that you might not even be aware of.

Of the teachers you mentioned, only Ms. Hall is still here. She's with us for so long but still looks the same!

I'm so glad you have great memories of your time at our school, and hope you can one day visit, since you live on the island! Nuthin's been the same since 9/11, so you can't just drive on in. But if you call ahead and explain your situation to our clerks, they will probably be able to put you on the list at the front gate of the Base so you could stop by and check us out!

I like many of the others, just got an itch and decided to search old friends from my hickam days and came across this site! i am so glad i did! I was one of the lucky ones that got to complete all of my elem. education k-6 at hickam!! My 4 other siblings also attended most years there!
I attended from about 89-96?! give or take a year or two. I LOVE hickam and will forever cherish my memories there!!! I can still remember so many things... and people!!! I remember I had a group of friends that I mostly kept to.... I have found two of them... we seldom speak, but the memories are enough for me. I loved music class... Miss Michelle... i believe she was an assistan... was one of my favorite people... I remember her like I saw her yesterday... and Mrs. Stanley. She is honestly one of the best teachers i believe I have ever had. Thank you Hickam! Aloha!

I just read through all the comments and found one that said Mr. Smith had past away. Mr. Smith was a great teacher and really loved life. He was constantly flirting with the pretty (and much younger teachers). Not in a creepy way--just fun. He was my math teacher and homeroom (old hanger) in 1980-81. The basketball court was right outside the our classroom then, and he would shoot hoops with us all the time. He was not a young man then and I know that was 30 years ago so I'm not surprised, but its sad to hear that he is gone. Keith Morgan

I was a Teacher's Aide for Beverly Wong from 1987-1988. Each time I think of that year, I still feel honored to have been a part of the school staff. My name was Laurie Robertson and is now Laurie Emerson. It is hard to believe that some of my students who were 5 then, are all grown up!

Hi, my Dad was stationed in Hawaii 1963 - 66. I attended HES 1965-66. Our 5th grade class was in the largest quonset hut with the stage. We put on a talent show for the school and our parents. My 5th grade teacher was Mrs. Holliday and Mrs. Adams for 6th grade. 5th grade was the best year of my life. I learned to swim and got my ID, so I could go just about anywhere and in those days your parents didn't care as long as you were home for dinner. We have since returned to Hawaii in 2001, 2005, and 2008. Boy, the base sure has changed! I still have my class pictures from 1965 and 1966, is there some place to post those? I was also looking for Nadine Proctor. Aloha! Joni Babich Oril

HES, is really a great flashback on me & my life in general. Attended HES from 1989-1992 and really enjoyed my years while there. I had a few teachers by the name of:
Mrs. Tim, Mrs. Stanley, & Mrs. Nakano. I remember May Day, JPO, cafeteria duty, and many more good times with being a part of HES. Great school, staff, & teachers all in all.

I attended what was then called Hickam Post School in 1957 and 1958. I was in the 4th and 5th grade. I recall we were bused to school in a flat bed truck with wire fencing sides, and bench seats. Each month we had KP duty in the cafeteria.
Some of my classmates were Raynell Koening, Meredeth Greerson, William White.
If anyone responds to this from my class, I will try to find class photos to recall more.

Hi Phil, I also attended Hickam Post School in 1957 and 58. I have the same memory of the flat bed trucks with bench seats and navy blue canvas top. One of my classmates was Water Plummer, we were in the 3rd grade together. I used to have my class photo but it disappeared in one of our families many moves. If memory serves, my 3rd grade teacher was Miss Tanaka.
