I rarely go on MySpace, but figured that'd be a good place to start looking for Hickam Elementary alumni. Didn't want to scare 'em by contacting them directly, instead I posted to a HES alumni group and asked if they'd visit this blog. I might end up contacting a few later, the ones who'd remember me either when I was a classroom teacher or more recently as the tech coordinator/computer teacher.
One person contacted me and said he'd stop by here sometime. Cool. Let's get this thing going!

Thanks for the tip, I'll do that!
Bethany, thanks so much for stopping by and writing such wonderful thoughts of our school! Unfortunately, none of your former teachers are still there, although I knew each of them. I'm the computer teacher now, but was teaching the third grade when you were in Mrs. Kondo's room.
I'm so glad you mentioned the spring festivals! The kids complain when they have to dress up and perform, but everyone remembers it as a great time. And you still have the costume! I remember the third graders learning to dance w/those poi balls!
Have you ever visited Hawaii since then? If not, maybe someday you will..and relive your memories!
You probably learned to type somewhere else. The only keyboarding lessons the students have are in the computer lab, and when you were there we used an old program called "Paws", then moved on to "Type to Learn".
100 wpm is amazing!! I need to tell our students this when they complain to me about using the correct fingering as we use Type to Learn!
Thomas,
Thanks for stopping by! Yes, everyone remembers the water tower that's in front of our school, especially when it's lit up during the holidays.
I attended Hickam from 1968-1971. I miss Hawaii still.
Many people do have a fond spot in their heart for Hawaii and have such nice things to say about our little island..and our school! Thanks for stopping by!
Miriam -- Hey, that teacher would've been me, since I'm the computer teacher :)
I attended Hickam Elementary from the 1st through most of the 5th grade. We're talking eons ago. 1953-1957. My best friends were April Adair and Raelene Hardenburg. I had several Japanese teachers and one Hawaiian teacher. Mrs. Takenaga, Miss Neishi, Mr. Sewaki and Mrs. Akina who would not ever let us go to the bathroom unless we complimented her dress or jewelry, first. But, I can still hula, sing Joy to the World and Jingle Bells in Hawaiian and recall the Christmas party at school where we had poi and seaweed while the other classes had cookies and cake. Looking back, my class got the better deal. We spent 4.5 wonderful years at Hickam. I can still recall the taste of the wonderful tuna sandwiches at the MATS terminal and the Buna busses that took us to the bamboo forest and other nifty places when there were only about 3 hotels on Waikiki.
If anyone else was there during those years and is STILL alive (lol)drop me an email at puptent9@aol.com
Diana
Wow, Diana, thanks for finding us, "eons" after you attended HES!! I showed what you had written to some classes in our computer lab the other day and while they were mildly impressed (you know kids), the adults in the room were amazed that you remembered the names of your teachers and other details after all this time! Only three hotels in Waikiki..
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Sherrie,
Yes, the water is still decorated with lights during the holiday season and can be seen for miles. I'm glad you have fond memories of your time with us in the islands.
Some of our long-time teachers know Mrs. Ito, so you may actually know some of them.
Hope you find your way back here some day. Thanks for writing!
omg this is so cool! i come onto the computer and decide to google hickam, and they have a blog!!!!
i attended 2nd - 4th grades fromm 00 - 03. it rocked! i live in colorado now, in 8th grade, but my fondest memories are of hawaii. one i can't get out of my head is the pizza. (pretty stupid, huh) i remember the little round pizza with the cubes of pepperoni. do you stil have those? i also remember the type class, i did it but never paid attention, and now i'm so slow! tell all those kids that when they get to middle school, they must type EVERYTHING!
i stink! (that explains the lack of capitaization, i only do that for school) my teachers were Mrs. staly, Mrs. Kawakami, and in 2nd i had mrs.kay but she retired and i forget the name of the new person started with an s hmm.... i had mr. chitani (i can't spell) for math too. ummmmm... thats all i can think of, well there's a lot more but it short and stupid, so by folks! this is Sarah Lewis sayin well.. by folks i guess... thats dorky... well bye anyway!!!
Glad you found us, Sarah!
Do you remember me? I'm the computer teacher (Ms. Haraguchi) who tried to get you to type! I'll pass on your tip to our students about making sure they learn to type well because when they go to middle school they'll be expected to type everything :)
Hope you're doing well in chilly Colorado.
Ms. Haraguchi, I remember you...my typing is really good and ever since I finished Elementary School... I can type really fast and without looking at the keyboard.
I attended Hickam Elementary from 1963 to 1967. Had a wonderful time at that school. Playing tether ball, the May Day parades, working in the cafeteria, Pop Warner Football. My wife and I still get to the Islands at least once a year. So many good memories. David Szafranski.

Thanks for stopping by, David!
I'm glad you're able to visit Hawaii often, and that you reinforced my believe that people do recall the May Day / Spring Programs fondly, even though kids always say they don't like it when they have to perform.
Aloha!
I attended HES for third through sixth grade-1957-61. I remember working in the cafeteria loading lunch trays into a steam box to clean them. Plenty hot, you know!!! On a happier note, I remember JPOs and the JPO party once a year, playing tetherball and Jan Ken Po, the leis and hula and maypole on May Day. The quanset hut for a gym. The water tower. Stevie Throckmorton, my first love, and Patty Mundell, one wicked wahine!!! I am a retired teacher and techie. I got my M.Ed. at UH in '82. I live in the D.C. area and do the websites of the Hawaii State Society, www.hawaiistatesociety.org, and the Ke Ali'i Maka' ainana Hawaiian Civic Club, www.kamhcc.org. I return to Hawaii at least once a year. My sister, who still lives in Hawaii, just returned from a Hickam reunion in Nashville.

Thanks for checking in, Gini..have we heard from you before?
You have an excellent memory..and seems like some of what you recall hasn't changed much.
We're glad to hear you keep your Hawaii ties and are able to visit what obviously is a special place for you.
Aloha!
hello. I attended HES from 84-90. Yup hit every grade. Good times. Looking for Valerie Centeno if anyone knows her. Still good friends with Ana and Angela Domingo. We all moved to San Antonio in 90. I am in the Army stationed at Ft Knox Kentucky now. Thanks for putting up this page.

Hi. I attended HES from 1981-1985. I had Mrs. Iida, Mrs. Sakashita, Mrs. Kawachika, & Mrs. Kondo. I loved all of them. I remember being able to wear our swimsuits on the last day of school one year. We played in the water all day. I remember a halloween costume contest. My mom made me a yellow butterfly costume & I won for cutest! There was a music teacher at that time. I don't remember her name, but she was awesome. SHe is part of the reason I love music so much. Wish I could find some of my classmates. Maybe someday.....
I just looked through your wonderful web-site and lots of pictures. They bring back great memeories. I student taught at Hickam in first grade with Pam Hall in 1991. Then I taught a year of Kindergarten and a year of second grade at Hickum moving from Hawaii. I loved my time at Hickum and think of it very often.

I don't know if this page is still active, I was bored and googled HES and this popped up. I went there in the early 90's for part of 1st-4th. I can't remember who my teacher was in 1st grade. I remember having Mrs. Larson in second I think. I remember her husband worked on a submarine and when they would go out to sea she would let us watch them head out from the second story balcony in front of the classroom. I think this was the year we colored pictures of "Rainbow Crow". At the end of the year I remember some of us getting to take home the class project, I got the one we did on that book and I still have it somewhere in storage. lol
In 3rd grade I had Mrs. Ing, but only for part of the year since she was pregnant at the time. We had a substitute but I can't remember her name, she was an older lady.
In 4th I had Mr. Wise, he was such a comedian. I remember all of my friends were jealous when they found out I had gotten assigned to his class. Anytime we were reading books and it described a good-looking guy he would insert his name following the description, or compare the guy by reading the description and saying "He was tall, dark, and handsome. A lot like Mr. Wise." Unfortunately he suffered a bad knee injury during a basketball game against the 6th graders, so I didn't get to see him again before we moved to Tinker AFB in OK.
I remember the spring programs, and the school song. Its stuck in my head and I randomly hum it to myself at times. Most people find it entertaining that I remember a school song from childhood after all those years. A lot has changed since then, but no matter what Hawaii will be some of the best memories I'll have.
We were there at the same time...
Bethany Krotz
Karisa,
I saw your post and my jaw absolutely dropped, having attended HES after you from 89-91. I had Mrs. Iida in kindergarten and Mrs. Sakashita for 1st grade. Both excellent teachers I'll never forget! I still remember winning the annual Thanksgiving turkey race and taking my family home a 20 lb turkey to eat for the holiday. I'm 33 now, living in Colorado which was the last assignment my father had before retiring. Haven't been back to Hawaii since and have been yearning to return. Thanks for the memory! Almost made me cry.
