Do you remember your first day of school?

Students began streaming back to Hickam Elementary yesterday. Because we started so much earlier this school year, some haven't registered yet and might trickle in the next couple of weeks. Our enrollment is quite high already, and will probably continue to increase for a while.

Ahh, the first day of school. New supplies, new faces, and for many, a totally new school in a totally new state. Some of our students are veterans at being "the new kid in class", having already attended several different schools in their short educational careers. For our youngest, Hickam Elementary is their very first in what might become a long list of schools.

When asked, most children use words such as "excited", "scared", and "shy" to describe how they felt their first day at school. I wonder how many adults can remember how they felt their very first day, especially at a school they had never attended before.

Chime in: how did you feel on your first day at school? Or more specifically, how did you feel on your first day at Hickam Elementary?

I remember my first day at HES it was in third grade and I just entered Ms. Haraguchi's class. I had a lot of fun there and met many wonderful people. Then as the years went on each new school year brought me to another great teacher. Ms. Freedman was for fourth and she was awesome I remember she loves pooh bear. Then Mr. Moore and all the cool camera equipment we got to handle which later on I took a broadcasting class in highschool. Then sixth grade brought ms muranaka and we made some pretty cool rockets in that class. I loved staying at HES. Each school year brought something different.

Tiwa! Thanks for stopping by, both here on the blog and the computer lab when you were in Hawaii!! As always, it was so good to see you!

You wrote such wonderful things about our school and teachers. I've let them know that you checked in.

Best of luck in your last yr in HS, and I hope to see you again when you return for pre-med. Aloha!

My first day of school at Hickam Elementary school was full of tears and trepidation. But the next day, according to my father, my sister and I tore out of the car and ran to our classrooms without even saying goodbye.

My memories of Hickam are warm and friendly. The face of my first grade teacher still stands out. I just wish I could remember her name! I attended from 1968-1971. Being an Air Force brat, all grown up, I still consider Hawaii one of my two homes.

Nice to hear from you, Paula. I hope you've had the opportunity since then to re-visit your second home!

If it wasn't for Ms. Freedman (now Reid-Selth) my first day at HES would have been a bust! I was sooo nervous but Ms. Cassie put me right at ease and I will never forget that - it was the best year and she will ALWAYS be my favorite teacher! I also had Mr. Moore for 5th grade - and yes, I still have problems with tests in Math. Ms Tim was my sixth grade teacher, along with Mr. Sakata for Math. Mr. Sakata always gave me a hard time :) so was always glad to go back and see Ms. Tim!
I am a Junior now and taking Advanced Placement classes so the education and the teachers in Hawaii must have paid off! No, Mr. Moore not in Math though! My AP classes are in History and Science, and English. I really miss the beaches, sand and sun! My Dad retired in May and we are staying here in Idaho. Hope to come back and see everyone real soon.

I remember my first day of school and it was in fifth grade. I remember the teacher but not her name. She had really, really long hair and she had to leave the school because her husband passed away. I also remeber that I to repeat fifth grade and I had Mr. Moore. But for sixth grade...I had Ms. Tim. I just want Tiwa Leveille to email me because she's still my best friend. Tell her Christina Paik still remembers her from 5th grade till 8th grade. Man, it has been such a long time since I knew she still remembers this school. I miss her alot because I had alot of fun with her when I was still in Hawaii.

I was there Fall 1967-May 1970 (4th-6th grades)-so long ago I don't remember many names. I had Mrs. Ono (Oh no, it's Mrs. Ono!) and she was great. I had Miss McIntyre, too. Some classes in the trailers beside the Quonset Hut-are those still there? JPO and May Day performances were lots of fun. My first day there? I was scared to death. Before going I thought we'd be in grass huts and eating strange food. Was I wrong! I hope everyone who attends has as much fun as I did.

Don't know what made me think to look up the school today but I'm glad I did.

Krystal - and now freezing in Virginia.

Krystal,

Thanks for looking us up and sharing your memories! The Quonset hut has been renovated to be our performing arts area as well as music, Gifted & Talented, and PE classrooms. As for trailers still being there, I don't know anything about them, but there are what we call portable classrooms next to the Quonset, but they probably weren't there when you were.

Sorry you're freezing in VA, why don't you come and visit us in warm Hawaii? :)

Anonymous,

Wow! Thanks so much for sending the YouTube links! I'll ask teachers who were there at the time of that chorus performance whether they remember it. Were you a part of it? The song/dance routines were so elaborate for kiddies!!!

I remember my frist couple of days of kindergarden at Hickam. Well the most specific thing I remember is that when my mom was dropping me off on the 1st or 2nd day there was a little girl there that was crying her head off when her parents were dropping her off. Following her lead, I decided to start crying as well. My teacher's name was Mrs. Hirashibara I believe back in 82-83.

Kimo,

Wow, that's pretty amazing that you can remember your first days of kindergarten! Bet there are a lot of kids who also decide to cry just because someone else is.

Thanks for dropping us a line..and for those YouTube videos!
